Polished Concrete in Pittsburgh, PA
LICENSED, AWARDED, AND REVIEWED
One rapidly growing and popular type of solution in the concrete restoration industry is the polished concrete floor. These floors can transform the worst slabs into works of art in just a few steps. They will last the life of your building, be easy to maintain, and can even be re-polished very easily if needed.
THE POLISHED CONCRETE PROCESS
The polish concrete process can vary in steps depending on desired finish. However, every job first begins with an assessment of the hardness of your concrete. From there a specially-formulated set of diamond embedded tooling is applied to a floor grinder. The first cut will open the concrete, removing the top layer of the floor with a coarse finish. This step removes all kinds of debris and ugly spots from the floor.
Then the floor is repeatedly ground in successive steps with increasingly finer grit diamonds. Each step of grinding removes the scratches formed from the previous step. Typical polish floors start around #30/40 grit diamonds and can go up to any desired grit such as #800 or even #1500. The higher the desired grit finish, the longer the process, but the more shine that will be obtained.
STRENGTHENING AND BEAUTIFYING THE CONCRETE
Also in the polishing process there are often densifiers, dyes, and sealers applied. Densifiers are a special chemical formula that will penetrate concrete pores and form crystalline structures, increasing the strength of your concrete as well as reducing the permeability of the slab. Dyes come in all kinds of colors and changing the color of the polish makes your slab even more unique.
These dyes are mixed with a solvent such as acetone and penetrates the top part of your floor, and alters the look of your concrete entirely. They can even be applied with the use of stencils to provide artwork into your floor such as a logo. Sealers provide a protective top film on the floor that will increase the shine of the finished product as well as offering a protective layer from chemicals and other harmful contaminants of your concrete, and will prolong the brand new look on your floor for many years.

REAWAKEN YOUR CONCRETE WITH CONCRETE POLISHING
A very unique aspect of polishing concrete is that the slab remains the same and visible. Polishing simply beautifies the existing slab, rids it of debris and contaminants, and protects from future problems. No matter the condition of your current floor, the polishing process will open up the concrete to where the best of the concrete will be exposed.
However, you can still see the story and history of the concrete in a polish, which is an often enjoyed factor of a polish. Is there something else on top of your concrete? Other types of floor can also be reawakened with the polishing process such as terrazzo floors, or cementitious underlayments.
BENEFITS OF POLISHED CONCRETE
Polishing concrete has many benefits. The first being the life of the system. Polished floors will last the life of your building, and can easily be touched up to regain the original shine if it ever fades. These floors are also very low maintenance. No special chemicals or cleaning techniques, just routine traditional cleaning practices will keep your floor in top shape.
If the shine ever does begin to fade, the polish system can be restored quickly through one or two fine diamond grinds and re-finished. The whole service is fairly affordable as well as there are no to minimal materials involved. And of course, the finished product will have you questioning if it is the same floor that you started with.
